Don Papa GAYUMA Rum 40% is an exceptional limited edition from Don Papa; its name, ‘Gayuma’, roughly translates as ‘love potion’. This release was created as a tribute to the shamans and traditional rituals centred around Mount Kanlaon on the Philippine island of Negros, the region closely associated with the origins of Don Papa. For this special edition, the rum is first aged for three years in ex-bourbon casks, developing a smooth base with notes of vanilla and oak. It then undergoes an elaborate double finish, which sets it apart from classic Don Papa bottlings and lends it additional depth as well as a distinctive smoky character.

In the first stage of the finish, Don Papa Gayuma spends a further six months in heavily toasted Rioja wine casks, which impart additional fruit, spice and toasted aromas. This is followed by a final three-month maturation in oak casks that previously held smoky Islay malt whisky. As a result, vanilla, orange peel, cocoa and warm spices blend with subtle peat smoke and spicy wood. With an alcohol content of 40 per cent, a bottle size of 0.7 litres and the included gift box, this limited edition is particularly suited to lovers of whisky-cask-finished rum and makes an excellent gift.

Tasting Note

Colour: Dark amber with coppery highlights.

Nose: Smoky and sweet with vanilla, subtle peat and notes of toasted wood.

Palate: Smooth and full-bodied with vanilla, orange peel and cocoa, complemented by cloves, mint and spicy oak notes.

Finish: Long-lasting, spicy and smoky with a subtle hint of peat and warm oak notes.

Don Papa GAYUMA rum is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at around 18 to 20 °C, allowing the sweetness, spice and smoke to unfold in perfect balance. Dark chocolate, roasted nuts and strong hard cheese pair well with the cocoa, vanilla and oak notes. Desserts featuring orange, chocolate or caramelised fruit also harmonise very well with the profile. Thanks to its finish in ex-Islay malt casks, this bottling is also particularly suited to rum and whisky enthusiasts who appreciate smoky cask maturations.
